What Cars Are Accepted as Collateral?

17 july

When there is an urgent need for a large amount of money, a standard unsecured loan is often ineffective due to low limits and high interest rates. In such a situation, your car can become a powerful financial tool. I have worked with financial instruments for many years and know for sure: using a vehicle as collateral is one of the fastest ways to obtain substantial financing at a reasonable interest rate. However, banks do not accept just any vehicle and carefully assess their risks. Let's take a closer look at which cars are most likely to be accepted as collateral, how the valuation process works and what you should pay attention to before signing the agreement.

How Does a Car Loan Secured by a Vehicle Work?

To clearly understand the process, let's first look at how the transaction works. When you take out a loan secured by your car, the vehicle serves as security for the repayment of the borrowed funds. This significantly reduces the bank's risks, allowing you to expect a lower interest rate and a higher credit limit compared with standard quick loans.

In practice, there are two ways a car can be used as collateral:

  1. With the right to drive. This is the standard approach in the banking sector and the one I recommend considering. You receive the money, the bank registers the encumbrance in the State Register of Encumbrances over Movable Property, but the car remains in your possession — you can continue using it every day.
  2. With the vehicle placed in a special parking facility. The car is taken to a secured parking lot until the debt is repaid. This format is more commonly used by certain financial companies and pawnshops specialising in vehicles. Banks, however, generally allow the owner to continue using the car, as maintaining their own parking facilities is not part of their core business.

Immediately after the documents are signed (the loan agreement and the pledge agreement), information that the car is pledged is entered into the State Register of Encumbrances over Movable Property. You cannot sell or otherwise transfer the car without the consent of the pledgee, as information about the pledge is recorded in the register.

What Cars Do Banks Most Often Accept as Collateral?

Banks need a reliable guarantee that the money will be repaid. If a borrower stops making payments, the financial institution needs to be able to sell the car quickly on the market. Therefore, the key criterion is the vehicle's liquidity.

Banks assess collateral based on several parameters:

  • Vehicle age. The maximum permitted vehicle age is determined by the bank's internal rules and depends on the make, model, loan term and other factors.
  • Brand popularity. Brands such as Toyota, Volkswagen, Hyundai, Kia, Skoda and Ford are among the clear favourites. There is stable demand for these vehicles, and their market value is more predictable.
  • Type of vehicle. Banks are most willing to accept mass-market passenger cars and light commercial vehicles.
  • Country of registration. In most cases, banks accept vehicles registered in Ukraine as collateral. Vehicles with foreign registration are generally not financed by banks due to legal and operational risks.

What Cars May Not Be Suitable as Collateral?

There is a category of vehicles that banks do not consider suitable as collateral. I always recommend carefully assessing the legal and technical condition of the car before applying.

Here are the critical factors that may make a loan secured by a car unavailable:

  • Legal restrictions. If the car has been seized due to debts or is involved in a court dispute, the bank will generally refuse to accept it as collateral. The bank checks information about encumbrances and other legal restrictions through the relevant state registers.
  • Problems with documents and the VIN. If the body number is damaged by rust, does not match the registration certificate or has been altered, the bank will most likely refuse the vehicle. Problems may also arise if the vehicle owner is not present and you are acting under a standard power of attorney — banks require the legal owner to be personally present.
  • Serious accidents. Banks are generally not interested in vehicles with damaged body geometry or those that have been involved in major accidents, as their liquidity is minimal.
  • Uncommon models. This includes exotic, retro or rare brands for which it is difficult to determine market value. At the same time, popular Chinese brands such as BYD, Geely, Chery and MG are now common on the market, so banks accept them under standard conditions. The final decision depends on the lending policy of the particular bank.

How Is a Car Valued Before a Loan Is Arranged?

The bank carries out the valuation itself or with the help of an independent appraiser. In most cases, the loan amount is around 60–80% of the vehicle's appraised value, although the exact percentage depends on the bank's policy. This margin protects the bank against possible market price fluctuations or vehicle depreciation during the loan term.

First, an online preliminary valuation is carried out based on basic parameters. If the figures are acceptable to you, an inspection is scheduled: a bank specialist or an independent expert checks the vehicle technically and records any defects. The final loan amount is then determined based on this report.

What Factors Affect the Valuation of a Car?

The expert pays attention to details that determine the vehicle's market value in the valuation report. I recommend preparing the car for inspection so that no negative factor unnecessarily reduces your credit limit.

The technical condition of the vehicle — engine and transmission performance, suspension condition and the absence of warning lights on the dashboard — is the foundation.

  • Body condition — chips, dents, signs of poor-quality repainting or rust are carefully recorded. Good body condition can have a positive impact on the valuation results.
  • Mileage — the lower the mileage shown on the odometer, the higher the liquidity.
  • Equipment and trim — a leather interior, modern multimedia system and a second set of tyres can add value.
  • Service history — a service book showing regular maintenance confirms that the vehicle has been properly cared for.

What Documents Are Required to Use a Car as Collateral?

The paperwork here is simpler than with large unsecured loans. However, the documents must be complete and in order.

You will need:

  1. Ukrainian citizen's passport (or an ID card with an extract).
  2. Tax identification number.
  3. Vehicle registration certificate. It is important that your name is listed in the “Owner” field, as the vehicle owner is the person who signs the agreement.
  4. Proof of income may be required depending on the lending terms and the bank's internal rules.
  5. If necessary — notarised consent from the other spouse if the car is jointly owned by the spouses.

All registration documents must be original and undamaged.

What Should You Consider Before Taking Out a Loan Secured by Your Car?

Using a car as collateral is a serious decision. I recommend carefully reading the loan agreement and paying attention to the following aspects:

  • Insurance requirements. Some lenders require CASCO or other insurance. Insurance requirements depend on the specific bank's policy and lending terms.
  • Additional fees. Consider one-time loan issuance fees, possible costs for registering the encumbrance and other associated payments depending on the bank's terms.
  • Vehicle use conditions. Make sure the agreement allows you to use the car freely (for example, check whether travelling abroad is permitted).
  • Penalties. Find out under what circumstances the lender may initiate enforcement against the collateral in accordance with the agreement and applicable law. This will help you avoid unexpected consequences.

Remember: your car is your capital. Use it wisely, and a loan secured by your car can become an effective tool for solving your financial needs.
